GALA
Once again we participated in Sherburn Gala, with a float themed on a 'birthday party' to commemorate the gala's 30th anniversary.
Our school was awarded 1st prize, well done to all involved.

SPRING TERM SCHOOL EVENTS
TREE PLANTING
Pupils in Reception and KS1 helped to plant some new trees in our school grounds during the Spring Term. They planted a variety of established and young trees including wild cherry, Rowan, Ash and Birch. As a school we are all looking forward to the trees developing into a wonderful woodland area, which will be fantastic for attracting more wildlife into our grounds and a great resource for studying the natural environment. Trees have also been planted to give shade near the adventure playground in KS2 and others have been planted near the co-op boundary fence.

Clarke Hall
The year 4, 5 and 6s in our school have been studying Tudors in their History lessons. The highlight of this topic was a visit to Clarke Hall in January. Find out more by visiting the class pages!
Rugby Training
This half term Mrs Seekings'and Mrs Dulling's classes have been trained (in their PE lessons) by a professional rugby player from Leeds Tykes. So far they have learned the skills of passing, dodging and kicking as well as being taught games like scarcrow tig. Here are what some of the children think: " He is a really good coach. I have learnt alot about rugby." says Jodie in Mrs Seekings' class. " He is good because he has taught me things that I didn't know about." says Daniel who is also in Mrs Seekings' class.
India Day
Recently, The year 3s and 4s in our school had an India day, to do with their term's topic on India. They all enjoyed doing activities like; making masks, peacocks and charm snakes. The day ended with an authentic indian dance. Most of the children also wore indian clothes, like saris and tasted some indian food. Parents were invited to watch their children's performances.
Big Hair and Beyond
As you may know March the 11th was Comic Relief Day and Hungate school help a non-uniform day. Each pupil paid 50 p plus an additional 10p for having 'strange hair'. The money raised from the sale of our school newspaper 'The Hungate Hound', published by the yr 6 writer's club, was also put towards our contribution to Comic Relief. We help a special assembly, and each class provided some form of 'entertainment'. However, the sight of some of the staff and their 'silly hair' was entertainment enough! WATCH THIS SPACE FOR DETAILS OF HOW MUCH MONEY WE RAISED.

The Tsunami Appeal
On the 26th December 2004, the world was shocked to hear about the terrible tidal wave that hit south Asia. Our school decided to help! School Council held an emergency meeting to discuss how we would help. It was decide that our school would host a bun sale, Bring & Buy sale and sell competitions to aid the disaster. We made Friday 14th January our Tsumami Appeal day. The Year 3/4s held the bun sale, the Year 5s made competitions and the year 6s organised a Bring & Buy sale. so far, we've raised over £800. Individual children also helped by completing sponsored events ( such as a bike ride and a sponsored silence) or donating their spare change.

We are an ACTIVE School!
We are officially an active school and have been awarded the ACTIVE MARK by Sport England in recognition of the curricular and extra curricular sporting and physical activities available to our pupils. The award further strengthens our participation in the HEALTHY SCHOOLS SCHEME. The logo will soon appear on our school stationary. Well done to everyone involved in the application process. For more information about the ACTIVE MARK click on the logo below.

Football Report
by Jordan, Stephen & Ashley
On Friday 8th October, the newly formed school team played at Athelstan in a tournament to decide who would go through to the Selby District finals. First, we played against Athlestan and the score was 1-0 to us! The goal scorer was Jordan. In the second match we played Brotherton. We won 4-0 and super striker Jordan scored a hat trick and Jack scored one. In the last match we played South Milford. A draw would do to send us through. The final score was 0-0. As soon as the whistle went we all celebrated. We are through to the next round!

The winning team - YIPEE!
LOW MILL 2004
The Y6's enjoyed a fantastic, funfilled residential week in the North Yorkshire Dales. They stayed at Low Mill, an activity centre in Askrigg, where they took part in a wide range of adventurous and team-building activities.

Dear Parents
As we start our new school year(2004-5) I know you would wish to join me in welcoming our new nursery teacher,Mrs Janice Darley, to our school. Mrs Darley teaches both sessions, joined in the afternoon by Mrs Everitt, Advanced Teaching Assistant, who joined us in June. A new nursery team for a new year!
At this time of year both our Governors and 'The Friends of Hungate'hold their Annual General Meetings.
. The Friends of Hungate AGM will be held, in School, at 7.00p.m. on Tuesday 28th September. This group of parents, staff and others who wish to support the school, make a significant contribution to our school in fund raiding projects, organising events for children and families.(e.g. Family Beetle Drive on Friday 24th September @ 7.00p.m. - free admission and great fun!) and supporting the curriculum (e.g. funding two visiting theatre groups). If you feel you could support them in any way please come along on the 28th September.
. You will recieve a copy of the Governors' Annual Report to Parents next week. Please do take note of the varied and hard work that this voluntary group of people does in supporting our school, rather like a board of directorsfor a company. Their Annual General Meeting with Parents will be held on Thursday 7th October in school, providing at least the parents of 15 children write to the Chair of Governors (via school) requesting the meeting. (This is a new government guideline).
Dates for the Autumn Term are to be found below. Please note there is an extra days closure on FRIDAY 26th NOVEMBER (when the hIgh School also closes) for a teacher training day.
If you come to school by car may I remind you to help
. Our neighbours at Peter Pan Nursery and the Harold Mills Centre by not parking in their spaces;
. The school itself by not using the school car park.
Please use the co-op carpark where of course there is the connecting gate into school grounds (open before and at the end of the school day). This also help sreduce the traffic on North Crescent, which equally makes it safer for those walking to school. Better still, why not try walking to school and become a healthier family too?
Finally, club activities do not start until the last week of September, partly due to the Y6 residential. Perpatetic music lessons have already started.
Yours sincerely
Micheal Whaley

Dear Parents
Reminders and Follow Up to Recent Newsletters
· At this stage there have not been enough enquiries from families regarding French Club to make it viable. If you have forgotten and wish to contact the company who would provide them please telephone 07798 751786 this week. Thank you.
· The Bag to School event raised £270 for Friends funds. Superb!
· BODY SHOP EVENING THIS TUESDAY (16th November) 7.00 p.m. Tickets from school – Great for Christmas presents, etc.
· Present Year 5 bookings for next September Low Mill Residential Visit due in by this Friday 19th November.
· Thank you! Over 70 Christmas Shoe Boxes to date. Any late ones can come in this week we have been told.
· Friday 19th November is Children in Need Day. As in previous years your children are invited to wear non-uniform in return for
i) 30p (or more?) donation to Children in Need and
ii) a decorated and filled jar for our Christmas Fair: in the past families have exceeded themselves. [If you are not able to find a jar, a contribution to the Christmas Fair tombola would be gratefully received].
The National Fruit and Vegetable Scheme: starts in North Yorkshire, including our school, next week – Thursday 25th November. This provides for a piece of fresh fruit or vegetable to be provided free of charge for children in any class which has children in it from Nursery through to Year 2. In our school that is up to Mrs Butterfield’s and Mrs Devey’s class. Each afternoon (and morning for children attending morning Nursery) these children will be able to eat their fresh fruit or vegetable (raw) as part of the Government’s scheme to encourage healthy eating for healthy people. As a school that has achieved its national ‘Healthy School Award’ we are very much in support of this initiative. Please note that only one type of fruit or vegetable is given each day (i.e. there isn’t a choice – encouraging children to try new fruits / vegetables) and children cannot take their eats home. Also:-
OUR PRESENT SYSTEM OF SELLING DRINKS AND FRUIT AT MORNING BREAK WILL CONTINUE FOR ALL CHILDREN IN MAIN SCHOOL.
Finally, I look forward to seeing as many families as possible at our two Class Assemblies this half term (Mrs Seekings’ class Open Night which this year is on Thursday 25th November from 4.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.: A separate hand bill accompanies this letter.
Oh - don’t forget school is closed for a staff training day Friday 26th November.
22 November 2004
Dear Parents
Thank you for your support for Children in Need last Friday (and of course the ‘Friends’ forthcoming Christmas Fair with your gifts). £118 was raised for Children in Need, which included the sale of the Writers’ Club ‘Hungate News’.
Don’t forget our Open Night on Thursday (25th November) from 4.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. Everyone who wants to come along and see the school is very welcome. There will also be meetings of interest for certain groups of parents:-
5.00 p.m. Nursery and Reception Families (find out about life in the Foundation Stage and the value of play) in Reception classroom
5.30 p.m. Year 2 Families (End of Key Stage 1 Assessments and Tests) in Miss Spearing’s classroom
6.00 p.m. Year 6 Families (End of Key Stage 2 Tests) in the ICT room
I look forward to seeing you on the night.
This week is National Anti Bullying Week. Following our parent survey in July, our Governing Body and Senior Leadership Team have both reviewed our policies on Anti Bullying and Behaviour in the school. Some parents raised the issue of not knowing clearly what the school procedures are and so both these policies are reissued to each family and accompany this letter. I hope the copies are of interest and help to you.
Finally I would like to remind you that further such closure is planned for Wednesday 5th January 2005, the spring term beginning on Thursday 6th January 2005.
Yours sincerely
M J Whaley
