THE SUBJECTS OF THE CURRICULUM English
Through the National Curriculum, supported by the National Literacy Strategy, we aim to give children the skills to read, write speak and listen, so that they can communicate their ideas as fluently, as appropriately, as effectively and with as much confidence as possible. Much of this is developed through the daily "literacy hour".
- Please hear your child read as often as you can. Your child's class teacher will send home reading books so that you can share the reading process, talk about the pictures and what has been understood. You can make comments in your child's reading record which will accompany the book so that you and the teacher are in regular contact.
- Help your child to enjoy using words, to take pleasure from recognising patterns in groups of words, to enjoy the rhyme and rhythm of poems. Play them tapes of stories so that they develop a listening ear and a good span of concentration. Encourage them to listen to stories and news on the radio so that they develop an imagination. Talk about appropriate stories in the news. Encourage them to keep diaries so that they remember through words and pictures, their special memories. Play word games with them.
- Help your child to recognise letters and the sequence in the alphabet. Encourage them to practice their handwriting at home.
The school believes that parents are vital partners in their childrens' learning. Please support your children by talking about the work they are doing, by being actively involved with them and by showing that you value what they are doing in school.
You can really make a difference!
