Mathematics Through the National Curriculum, to be supported by the National Numeracy Strategy, we aim to give all children the opportunity to use and apply mathematics and will teach computational skills and introduce children to a broad range of concepts which will enable them to begin making decisions which will help them to solve problems. Children will be introduced to the language of mathematics so that they will be able to communicate their ideas and understanding clearly. Through problem solving experiences we will give children the opportunity to develop their powers of reasoning.
- Please support your child by playing counting games, counting in twos, threes, looking for patterns in groups of numbers, practising times tables, mental arithmetic skills etc.
- Share 'mathematical' language with them eg: which is bigger, which will come next, which is the smallest what would happen if ? etc.
- 'Play' at measuring in strides, hand spans, feet , etc. Estimate distances, periods of time. Guess how heavy, how long, how wide, how much etc.
- Cooking and baking activities at home help to teach children about accuracy of weighing, pouring, timing etc.
You really can help your children to develop their mathematical skills and understanding at home!
