SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
From time to time, many children in school have special educational needs. This may come about through an illness or set of family circumstances which have a temporary, but important detrimental effect on the way a child performs in school. For example, a family bereavement can cause intense distress. An ear infection may cause temporary impairment of hearing or a long illness may detrimentally affect a child.
Circumstances like these can affect any child.
However, there are some children who are more clearly identified as having special educational needs.
We define children with special educational needs as those who have significantly greater difficulty than the majority of their age and/or have a disability which prevents them from making use of educational facilities in school.
All children with special educational needs are enabled to engage in the activities of the school.
They have access to the full curriculum, including national curriculum and work is appropriately differentiated according to need. All children with special educational needs have their needs reviewed and their progress regularly monitored.
The school follows DfES recommended four stage model for identifying, assessing and providing for children with special educational needs.
Parents are made welcome, kept informed and are consulted about everything which is relevant to the needs of their child.
At any time, parents may discuss their child's progress with the class teacher, the school's special educational needs co-ordinator, Mrs P Coates and the Headteacher. As children move to other schools, all relevant records will be transferred.
