Dear Parent
ELECTION OF PARENT GOVERNORS
I am writing to let you know that there is to be an election for one Parent Governor to begin when elected. The governing body, when it is complete, will be made up of 18 governors of whom 6 will be elected by parents.
The term “parent” includes anyone who has custody of a child registered at the school, as well as “natural” parents. Parents can stand for election, nominate and second other parents, and vote in secret in the election, if a ballot is needed.
As well as parents, the governing body is made up of governors appointed by the Local Education Authority (the County Council), school staff, the headteacher and governors appointed by the rest of the governing body (community governors).
Parent Governors have a four year term of office and continue to serve even if their child(ren) leave the school during this period.
What Do Governors Do?
The governors’ work affects most aspects of the school’s work. They establish, with the Headteacher, aims for the school, and approve policies – for the curriculum, behaviour and discipline, for example; and are responsible for the school’s budget and the use and maintenance of the premises. More generally, they are expected to be in touch with the local community and to help guide the school to meet the community’s educational needs. They are also expected to help the school explain to the community what the school is trying to achieve for their children. A leaflet, providing further information, is available either in schools or from the Governor Support and Communications Team, County Hall, Northallerton, tel. 01609 532936, e-mail Governor.Support@northyorks.gov.uk.
The governors, together as a body, have a range of legal responsibilities, so being a governor is an important commitment and new governors should be willing to attend training to help them learn what is entailed.
Do Parent Governors have Special Responsibilities?
No. Parent Governors do not have “extra” duties. All governors are equally responsible and discharge their responsibilities as a body, not individually. The Parent Governors speak as parents: they can’t speak for all parents – and the Governing Body as a whole reports to all the parents each year.
Are there any restrictions which could disqualify parents from becoming Parent Governors?
Yes, but they are unlikely to apply to most parents considering becoming a parent governor. The restrictions are contained in the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2003, Schedule 6 and subsequent amendment Regulations. A copy of these is attached as a Self Declaration form the back of the nomination form. Parents putting themselves forward for election will be required to sign this form and return it with the nomination form. If any of the restrictions apply you should not proceed with your nomination as a governor. Also, you are disqualified from election or appointment as a parent governor if you are an elected member of the local education authority (or if you are paid to work at the school for more than 500 hours in any twelve month period commencing on 1 August and finishing on 31 July).
Governors are subject to checks to verify they are not named the Government’s list of individuals prohibited from working with children or vulnerable adults. This requires the elected parent in providing details to allow such a check to be undertaken. The elected parent will be provided, by the clerk to the governing body, with a List 99A form to complete and take to the headteacher along with proof of identity (passport, driving licence or birth certificate). The headteacher will pass the form to Governor Support at County Hall who will arrange for the check to be undertaken and inform the school of the outcome.
How are Parent Governors Elected?
Parent Governors must be people (aged at least 18) who have a child(ren) at the school when they are elected. Nomination forms are also available from the school. Each form must be signed by the candidate and by the person nominating the candidate. Both must be parents of children registered at the school. Candidates can also make a short statement about themselves – a maximum of 50 words will be allowed and this will be rigidly applied. You can nominate as many parents as there are seats to fill but you need a nomination form for each. Return the form to me by Friday 17 February 2006.
If more nominations are received than there are places to fill, there will be a secret ballot and I will send to each parent, ballot forms (1 per parent) and envelopes for their return. The form explains how votes may be cast.
If the number of nominations received is the same as the number of places to be filled, then those people will be declared elected. If there are fewer, those nominated will be declared elected and it will be for the governing body to fill any remaining vacancy by appointing a parent governor.
The rules of the election are written down in Procedures set by the Local Education Authority and these can be inspected at the school.
Results of the Election
The names of those elected will be displayed at the school for at least seven days and will be included in the next edition of the school prospectus. They will also be given in the next report issued to parents by the Governors.
Anyone having a query about the election is invited to contact the school.
Yours sincerely
Mrs F G Peill
Headteacher / Returning Officer
THE CLOSING DATE FOR NOMINATION IS 3.00 P.M., FRIDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2006.
Dear Parents 7 December 2005
A big thank you for your generosity and help in supporting:
· Children in Need events : you and the children raised £149.36.
· Friends of Hungate Christmas Fair : £1,008 was raised for their funds.
A great time was had at both these events / days and to raise so much money is a really positive bonus. My particular thanks to all parents and staff who made the Christmas Fair such a success.
I list below the forthcoming Christmas events to remind you and of course invite you to join us. Admission to the children’s performances in main school (Reception to Year 6) are by ticket so we can ensure you can all have a seat! Could I ask that if you are using your car to travel to school for any of these events do please try to make sure you do not inconvenience our neighbours when you park as they still need access to their homes. This includes the Harold Mills Centre who of course cater for the elderly visiting the centre and need to be able to drop people off, often in wheel chairs, near their front door or in their own parking area. You can park in the Co-op car park and the connecting gate will be open for you.

Please note that lost property will be cleared from our box (in passage by my office) during the Christmas holiday : do please check if you think your child may have belongings in it.
Finally for me it is time to say my goodbyes. After being in teaching for just over 36 years and being a Headteacher for 31 of those years it is going to feel very strange in January. I do have mixed feelings about retiring and yet obviously believe it is the right thing for me. I shall very much miss the daily contact with the children and you as families which to me is what a community school is all about. In the 9 years I have been at the school I am so grateful for the support I have personally had from the staff, governors and families. Visitors to our school often comment on the feeling of openness and friendliness that they feel when first visiting us. Long may that continue and I am sure that you will give Mrs Peill, my successor, similar support. It only remains for me to thank you personally for your support and friendship and at the same time wish you and your family a very happy Christmas and sincere best wishes for you all in the future - I am sure I will read and hear of your successes! My last assembly in school will be on the last day at 2.15p.m. Please feel welcome to join us.
Yours sincerely

Dear Parents 8 November 2005
A ‘Thank you’ section to begin with:
· Your Sainsbury vouchers (5,000+) have provided some KS2 ‘co-operative games’ equipment and for KS1, P E equipment e.g. playground balls, a new parachute and football training kits.
· We currently have about 50 Christmas ‘Shoe-Boxes’. [Pick up day is now 15 November so if you still wish to send a box to school, anytime this week is fine].
At this time of year remembrance poppies are available for children in school for a donation, and this week’s assemblies are about ‘remembering’.
We have recently had visits to school by North Yorkshire instrumental tutors who have performed for the children. This often creates interest in children to learn to play an instrument. Key Stage 2 children have been given an information leaflet. If you decide to apply for lessons please send to the school office and we will send them all to NYCC
on 18 November. The school has a number of brass instruments it can lend to children. Currently the following tutors visit our school: violin, brass, guitar, keyboard, woodwind.
I am sure you will know that two large improvement projects have been going on in our school.
· Cloakroom and toilet refurbishment for all such areas in the original (35 year old) part of school. These have now been modernised with new toilets / partitions / flooring and tiling.
· An accessibility project (stage 1) to enable those with disabilities to gain improved access to the older part of our building. This has included ramps to children’s entrances and a ramp and other improvements to the main school entrance. Further work needs to be done here including new electronically opening doors.
Government funding has been used to enable these significant improvements which therefore does not impinge on our normal school budget.
[IF AT ANY TIME ACCESS TO SCHOOL IS UNAVAILABLE THROUGH THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE OFFICE PLEASE USE THE SIGNED TEMPORARY ENTRANCE VIA THE HALL’S CHANGING ROOM].
Children in Need Day this year is Friday 18 November and a “wear blue day” (in non uniform!) is being held. If children wish to do this they are asked to contribute 30p to Children in Need and for their family to contribute to the forthcoming Christmas Fair by sending a Teddy Bear (if possible) [good condition but any size – not expected to be new!] or if unable then something for a bottle or tombola type stall. I thank you in anticipation of your help. The children are organising a colouring competition next week and having a cake stall on 18 November (contributions welcome).
The “wear blue day” (in our school on 18 November) is to link with events the following week including an assembly in school when a National “Stop Bullying” day will be held with people wearing blue to show their support (we have linked the two events together to cause less disruption etc to family life and school).
Our school is involved in a School Sports Partnership in the Sherburn / Selby area. As part of this, the partnership wishes to be able to inform parents about activities, clubs etc through having a place in each school for posters and other information to be put up. In our school this will be on the windows of Field View outside classroom, so do have a look to see what is going on for your children in the area.
Finally accompanying information will explain to you that the school has a further vacancy for a parent governor. Do please consider this important role in school and if you wish to be nominated, the relevant return date is Monday 14 November.
Yours sincerely

Dear Parents
A big thank you to all the staff who created such great experiences for the children in last week’s ‘Arts Week’. Do ask your child(ren) about it and view some of their work when you visit for parent interviews this week.
A Book Fair event will be held in school on Thursday 20th October 2005. Books will be sold on the spot rather than via an ordering system. Prices will range from £1 to £10.; most will be in the range of £4 to ££6. The event will be staffed by Derek Harrsion of Primary books. He will bring a comprehensive selection of reading material from the very best publishers and authors around today for children of all ages. Children may buy or reserve books with your approval and an envelope will be provided, for Miss Spearing's class and older, for you to send with an appropriate amount. Please note that every effort is made to offer pocket money choices wihtin the above prices. The fair will remain open after school, during parent interviews, to provide everyone with an opportunity to view and make selections. Please support this event which is aimed at encouraging your child to become familiar with good quality books which will complement the school curriculum. Your support for this event will also mean that the school will receive free books by way of commission.
A thank you to families for your support for our recent Harvest Festival (the produce you sent for the Festival itself and the donations of buns and pocket money for the bun sale which raised £88.50 – enough for 3 goats, through the Farm-Africa charity). You may like to know that the harvest produce gifts to the elderly and infirm in the area are gratefully received - responses included:
· “Thank you for the wonderful box of harvest produce”
· “Thank you for the parcel; a lovely assortment; I will put them to good use”
· “It was very much appreciated”.
This week you should also receive a detailed leaflet about the Shoe Box Appeal (Operation Christmas Child). Our school has supported this charity over the past few years to great success – lots of boxes being put together and brought to school. I commend the appeal to you as a way our children can support other children in the world – something that hopefully will have a real meaning for them. The appeal was launched via an assembly in school this week and we ask for boxes to be brought in by Friday 4 November. A useful task to do in the half term break?
A further package will also come home to you – ‘Bags to School’. You have been great supporting this, plus it may give you the incentive for a ‘clear out’ at home. Please only bring bags to school on Thursday 3rd November . Thank you.
Do remember the school closes this Thursday evening (20 October) for the half term break which includes a staff training day. School reopens on Monday 31 October.
Yours sincerely

6th October 2005 Dear Parents
I have to inform you that the school will be losing its longest serving member of staff on Thursday 20th October. Mrs Christine Poole began work as a midday supervisory assistant approximately 28 years ago but for most of that time she will have been known to whole generation of children (many of whom are now parents) as a member of our catering team. In recent years the children meet our catering staff more closely each day as they use the 'cafeteria' style of serving the midday lunch. Christine will be remembered as always being there; an attendance record to be proud of!, having a keen sense of humour and being full of fun - example - the dressing up for special events like Red Nose Day, where she was an instigator, not a follower. We will all miss her but wish her a very happy and long retirement with her husband Tony. If families wish to contribute to a retirement present for Christine, please send into school via class teachers.
Next week is our Creative Arts Week when apart from Numeracy lessons, most of the timetable will be given over to providing expereinces for the children, supporting them in developing their creative skills, particularly in the expressive arts (e.g. music, art and design, dance and writing), whilst also providing links to geography history, R.E, PE, ICT etc. It should be fun!
The general theme for the week is Stories Around the World. There will be two on-going projects all week: 1) Painting the side of the green container on the playground with a mural school sport to the London Olympics in 2012. (Thank you to Homebase in York and Friends of Hungate for helping provide paints etc) 2) A frieze for the hall linking into each classes theme(s) for the week.
There are visiting individuals and groups of people in school four of the days: Monday - theatre group story "The King of Copenhagen" to Nursery to Year 2 / 3 classes Tuesday - Story telling for KS2 Wednesday - Creative music sessions for KS2 Thursday - Dance sessions for Reception to Y6 classes. Each class is taking its own theme or approach to the week whilst also contributing to the outside mural and hall frieze:
Mrs Robertson / Mrs Reed - Native America: Story emphasis on art Mrs Parkinson - Africa (using story 'Handa's Surprise') Miss Spearing - African Folk Tales (Anansi) Mrs Butterfield / Miss Devey - Russia / Eastern Europe (Peter and the Wolf) Mrs Coates - Taking links from Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday visitors plus Japan and France too. Mrs Sawdon / Mr Latham - Different countries each day - India / Africa / New Zealand / Australia. Mrs Dulling - Around Great Britain Mrs Seekings - Creative Myths from around the World
The children will meet up for a 'Show & Tell' type assembly on Friday afternoon with each class sharing something from the week with all the others. It is intended to be fun! A week to look back on and think: "well worth the effort, lets do it again"!
Yours sincerely Mr J. Whaley Headteacher

Dear Parents 26 September 2005
In Mrs Coates’ class and above, your child will bring home leaflets /information about next week’s National ‘School Walking Week’. We hope you will support the campaign next week and then keep it going, helping all concerned keep fit and cutting down the pollution effects of travelling by car.
Our Harvest Festival will be held on Thursday 6th October at 2.15pm. All parents are invited to the occasion which is being presented this year by children from lower KS2 classes, i.e Mrs Butterfield / Devey, Mrs Coates and the Year 4's from Mrs Sawdon's / Mr Latham's classes.(Please note that earlier in the week the above classes will do a “dress rehearsal” of the Festival for all the other classes in school).
It would be most helpful if you were able to make other arrangements for pre-school children, but if this isn’t possible all we ask is that if they become distressed e.g. crying, etc, please do slip out of the hall to ensure the children are able to perform their festival successfully.
I do also hope all families will feel they can support the festival as you have in the past by contributing to the harvest display which will be a central feature of the hall for all the children. Once again, this year we intend to distribute small parcels of produce to the elderly people in the area and we would be grateful if you could donate items of food, for example fruit, vegetables, tinned or packaged food, or flowers to arrive at school for the morning of Tuesday 4 October.
If you would like to nominate a local senior citizen (neighbour, relative or friend) to receive a small parcel of produce delivered by your child/children please complete the second part of reply slip below and return to your child’s class teacher with a clean plastic carrier bag. The produce will be shared out on Friday morning following the seervice and if you are able to help with this I would be very grateful..
Please let me know on the form below.
Thank you for your support and do pop in to view the harvest display.
Yours sincerely
